If you are on Sage and starting to feel the limits around job costing, committed cost, subcontractor valuations or forecasting, the question is usually not “which accounting system replaces Sage”. It is “what runs the project side, and which ledger does it post to”.
This page covers both: the Sage alternatives contractors move to, and the construction layer that makes any of them, including Sage Accounting itself, work for a live job.
Why contractors look beyond Sage
- Sage Accounting has no job costing, no budget per project and no purchase orders against budget. Sage 50 Professional has a basic Project Costing feature. Sage Job Costing, the old Sage 50 add-on, was withdrawn from support in October 2021.
- Committed cost is invisible until a bill is posted, so the live picture depends on a spreadsheet.
- Applications for payment, certification and retention are not native to Sage Accounting, Sage 50 or Sage 200 without add-ons.
- Sage 50 and Sage 200 are desktop or partner-hosted products, so project teams on site cannot use them and integrations are limited.
- CVR and cost to complete are rebuilt at month-end from Sage exports.
Sage does the ledger, VAT and CIS well. The alternatives below are about where the project side lives and which ledger it should post to.
What to look for
- Job costing and budget versus actuals per package and cost code, live.
- Commitments: POs and subcontracts counted against the budget when raised.
- Valuations, variations and retention as built-in workflows.
- Forecasting and cost to complete that moves with approvals.
- A native accounting sync so approved costs post once, coded.
- Days to adopt, not a partner-led implementation.
- Predictable pricing for an SME.

1. Sage Accounting + Planyard
Stay with Sage, add the project layer. If you are on Sage Accounting, the cloud product, nothing needs to change on the ledger. Planyard runs budgets, orders, approvals, valuations and CVR, and each approved cost posts to Sage with supplier, nominal code, VAT and the PDF.
If you are on Sage 50, moving to Sage Accounting is the smallest change that gets you a native sync; until then Planyard hands approved invoices to Sage 50 by email or CSV.

"Everything has a PO linked to a job number. No one does a job without a purchase order, so when I look at margin I know it’s the true margin."

The most common move off Sage 50. Xero is cloud, accountant-friendly and has CIS built in. It has no job costing either, so the same layer applies: Planyard in front, approved bills posted to Xero with tracking categories.

3. QuickBooks Online + Planyard
When the accountant runs QBO. QuickBooks Online has slightly stronger built-in job cost reports than Xero but still no commitments, valuations or forecasting. Planyard covers those and posts approved costs to QBO.

4. Sage 200 with Sicon
Stay in the Sage family, move up. Sage 200 with Sicon’s construction modules gives job costing, applications and retention inside the ERP. It suits firms with a finance team and a partner budget; project teams still tend to work outside it.
5. Eque2 Construct for Sage
Applications and retention inside Sage Accounts. The established add-on for Sage 50 and 200. Good at the payment process in the ledger, thin on approvals and live forecasting.

6. Sage Intacct Construction
Replace the ledger. Sage’s cloud construction financials, in the UK since 2025. Multi-entity consolidation, WIP and revenue recognition.
A migration project with bespoke pricing, and project operations still sit in another tool.

Our recommendation
For most UK SMEs the answer is not to leave Sage. Keep Sage Accounting for the ledger, VAT and CIS, and put Planyard in front of it for the project side.
If you are on Sage 50 and want a native sync, Sage Accounting is the smallest step; Xero is the most common alternative if you are changing ledger anyway. Move to Sage 200 or Intacct only when the ledger itself is what you have outgrown.
